Online (Distance) Learners
Since the goal of the Writing Lab is to create better writers not better individual pieces of writing, the priorities in a distance conference are the same as those in a face-to-face conference. The tutor will first address global issues (thesis, support, etc.) before moving on to grammar and style.
To schedule an online appointment, please follow these instructions:
Step One: Schedule the Appointment
Use the “Schedule an Appointment” button to make an appointment for a Writing Lab conference. In the “Meet Online?” dialog box that appears on the appointment form, click the radial dial next to “Yes. Schedule Online Appointment.”
If it is your first visit to the site, the scheduling system will first ask you to register before you can sign on and make an appointment.
Please make sure that you explain the assignment as thoroughly as possible in the space indicated on the appointment reservation form (“description of assignment/other concerns” box) or attach an assignment sheet as described in step two.
Please note that multiple conferences may be necessary for a paper which is longer than six pages.
Step Two: Attach a File
If you wish to attach a file when scheduling your appointment, scroll to the bottom of the appointment form to the section of the form that allows you to attach up to three files. Note: You will be able to import a file into the shared space during your online tutorial, so it is not necessary to attach a file to your appointment.
- For each file you wish to attach, simply click on “choose file” to navigate the appropriate file on your computer and select the file you want.
- Once you have selected the appropriate file, add a brief title in the “Document Title” field.
- When you have attached the file(s), click “Create Appointment.” (For more detailed information about how to upload a file, please download the document, Attaching a File to a Writing Lab Appointment.
Step Three: Join Your Appointment
When it is time for your appointment, you will log into your Writing Lab account and click into your appointment form. Once the appointment form has opened, click on the “start or join online consultation link.”
You must be online for your appointment as appointments are conducted in real time using a shared paper space and synchronous chat.
